The US Olympic Committee (USOC) has selected Boston over Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. as it’s applicant city to host the 2024 Games.

Boston 2024 has pledged a cost-effective and athlete-friendly approach, which will aim to reverse the trend of ever-more expensive Olympic Games. Bid leaders plan for 70 to 75 per cent of sporting venues to be located on college campuses, with more than 100 colleges located in the immediate area of the city. Boston’s compact Olympic vision is steered towards the use of existing venues, such as TD Garden and college facilities, including Harvard Stadium, Boston College’s Conte Forum, and Boston University’s Agganis Arena. A 60,000-seat temporary Olympic stadium is planned for south of downtown Boston and will host the opening and closing ceremonies, along with track and field events.

The Olympic village is planned for the former Bayside Expo grounds, with units eventually converted to workforce housing or student dorms for the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Boston has never hosted the Games before, but the USOC will be hoping that the city can lure the summer Olympics back to the US for the first time since Atlanta hosted the 1996 edition, with New York and Chicago missing out on the 2012 and 2016 Games.
