New £12.5m Flitwick Leisure Centre Completed Flitwick Leisure Centre is set to open to the public in March 2016. The Sports Consultancy initially worked with the Central Bedfordshire Council as part of the consultant team that completed the initial options appraisal before undertaking a detailed financial appraisal as part of the detailed feasibility study. The work The Sports Consultancy completed on the financial business case informed key decisions on the most financially viable facility mix, funding and affordability. It was also central to the Council securing grant funding of £1.5m towards the project, from Sport England. Central Bedfordshire Council’s leisure strategy, adopted by the council in January 2013, identified the need for larger and better quality leisure facilities in Flitwick. The former leisure centre was almost 40 years old and had a number of extensions over the past 30 years. It contained a 4 lane 25 metre swimming pool and a 55 station fitness suite. It was too small to support the current and future needs from a population which is expected to increase by over 13% from 2011 to 2031. The new centre contains an 8 lane 25 metre pool, learner pool, 4 court sports hall, 120 station health and fitness, 3 multi-activity studios, 2 squash courts, a climbing wall, crèche, café and 2 five-a-side 3G football pitches. The new centre will provide the local community with a state of the art leisure centre and will be managed by Stevenage Leisure Limited. <<...>> The project has been funded via a combination of capital receipts from residential development on the former leisure centre site, prudential borrowing, capital funding and grant funding from Sport England.
