New £41m Meadowbank Sports Centre Moves a Step Closer. Edinburgh City Council met last week to discuss the Meadowbank Sports Centre proposals. Councillors unanimously agreed to spend £700,000 on a detailed design brief which will then allow the project to be put out to tender. The move will also enable the local authority to confirm the exact cost of the major development. Initial plans for the centre include indoor and outdoor athletics tracks, 3G synthetic pitches for rugby, an eight-court sports hall with 500 permanent seats and a gymnastics area. Sportscotland has said it will commit £7m of funding, while the council estimates it will need to spend £6m. Other cash will come from selling surplus land at the site, revenue savings, and borrowing. Work on the project could start next year, with the new Meadowbank opening in summer 2019. The Sports Consultancy has been advising Edinburgh City Council on the financial business case from the inception of the redevelopment project.
